Specialist, Campaign and Development Communications, Development & Alumni Engagement

Position Overview

Strategic Events and Communications within Development & Alumni Engagement is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Specialist, Campaign and Development Communications for approximately 2 years.

Reporting to the Director, Campaign and Development Communications, This position will provide efficient and effective strategic communications support through excellent writing and editing of campaign and fund development related collateral, with a focus on the needs of the Cumming School of Medicine. Additionally this position will provide foundational graphic design support within the structure of established marketing and campaign tools. The position works a 35 hour work week, although due to shifting priorities evening extra hours and flexibility are sometimes required.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Research, write, edit and produce campaign communications materials to further the ability of our leadership and front-line fundraisers, primarily for the Cumming School of Medicine, to communicate effectively the purpose and scope of the campaign and the philanthropic needs of the institution and, thus, generate philanthropic revenue. Projects include but not limited to:
    • Cases for support and related campaign collateral for the philanthropic community
    • Donor/gift profiles, stories that demonstrate impact
    • Institutional and principal gifts fundraising proposals
    • Campaign support materials including but not limited to project descriptions/summaries, information fact sheets, etc.
    • Content for digital campaign communications tools including web content, video scripts, social media, electronic newsletters
    • Marketing and communications tools to support public celebrations and announcements
    • Speaking remarks and other event- and/or recognition-related materials, as required
  • Generate strategic communications plans in support of faculty donor recognition and engagement events
  • Ensure campaign communications and marketing materials are produced on time and on budget
  • Generate energizing stories that will be of interest to donor and alumni audiences for a variety of print and online environments
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues throughout Development and Alumni Engagement, as well as University Relations Marketing and Communications and various faculty partners to share, collaborate and ensure consistency and efficiency to support institutional messaging and positioning
  • Build supportive partnerships with colleagues in faculties and departments across campus
  • Participate and lead in the strategic communication planning process with ideas, creativity, enthusiasm and insight

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University degree preferably in communications, journalism or public relations
  • Minimum 5 to 7 years progressive work experience in the communications field, preferably in fund development and/or the non-profit sector
  • Demonstrated excellence in research, writing, and editing with particular insight into writing for donors; ability to translate complex content and information concepts into clear, concise and impactful communications; experience writing for all mediums including print, web, social and digital
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic communications planning and implementation
  • Experience managing print production (printing, design web, billboards, display, etc.) and maintaining consistent brand and visual identity standards
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and listening skills; sound judgement with exceptional ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • High level of problem solving and interpersonal skills, including strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work under pressure and on varying projects simultaneously
  • Proven ability to use discretion with confidential material; a high level of tact, diplomacy, professionalism and a strong work ethic are required
  • Ability to work independently but also collaboratively with others on and off-campus, at all levels within and outside the organization
  • Experience and fluency with design programs, including InDesign and the Adobe suite
  • Knowledge of content marketing, social media strategy and channels would be an asset
  • Understanding of, and a passion for, working in a performance management culture
