Position Overview

Development & Alumni Engagement is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Associate Director, Individual Giving.

The University of Calgary entered the public phase of a $1.3B Comprehensive Campaign on April 29, 2016. Energize: the Campaign for Eyes High is a university-wide initiative designed to significantly increase philanthropic revenue to the University. It is the single most ambitious philanthropic program ever undertaken by the University and among the largest comprehensive fundraising campaigns in Canadian history.

The Associate Director, Individual Giving reports to the Senior Director of Development and works closely with the Director of Development, Annual Giving, and other members of the Development & Alumni Engagement team. The Associate Director is accountable for advancing all university fundraising initiatives and is responsible for developing long-term relationships that result in philanthropic support of the University and Energize Campaign. The position demands a high volume of work with early morning, evening and weekend hours sometimes required in addition to some travel within the province and country.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • The Associate Director, Individual Giving will plan and implement effective strategies for attaining specific fundraising goals with alumni and donors from all University faculties and programs
  • Set and achieve annual and campaign fundraising targets and other fundraising metrics for activity with the Senior Director of Development
  • Assist the Director of Development, Annual Giving with developing and implementing a mid-range giving program, and an overall strategy for development initiatives within specific geographic regions, including coordination with faculty-based and institutional initiatives, alumni programs, and regional colleagues
  • Execute all major elements of the development process from identification and qualification to cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Manage, oversee and motivate two junior front-line fundraisers
  • Monitor own, and team, activity and participate in monitoring requirements of the development team
  • Write for development including: solicitation and acknowledgement letters, proposals and stewardship reports
  • Ensure activity is coordinated with key components of the institutional and faculty-based fundraising campaigns to leverage approach to donors and prospects
  • Ensure compliance with prospect management procedures and other university policies and procedures
  • Ensure proper hand-off of major gift prospects to appropriate unit of the University's development team
  • Meet an annual target of 150 face to face meetings.
  • Effectively manage fundraising resources and practice ethical fundraising in accordance with the University's mission and values
  • Manage a travel budget, under management's supervision
  • Ensure ongoing personal development in fundraising and the post-secondary learning environment 

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A University degree is required; preferably in Business, Communications or other related field
  • Ideally 3-5 years of work experience, preferably in a development/fundraising environment
  • Previous experience working within the non-profit sector, alumni relations, a post-secondary educational setting or a large, complex organization is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience in soliciting gifts in the range of $1,000 - $25,000
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel; broad knowledge of and experience in the use of research materials, including the internet and online informational databases
  • Highly developed interpersonal, written and oral communications skills required
  • Ability to produce compelling communication tools for use in development, including, gift proposals, presentations and collateral materials
  • Strong problem solving and decision making capabilities; the ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative as appropriate; attention to detail is critical
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work both independently and collaboratively as required
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively, at times under tight deadlines
  • Strong project management skills; ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and work effectively in a large, complex, dynamic and sophisticated organization
  • Must understand and practice a high standard of confidentiality and ethical information collection
  • Knowledge of Raiser's Edge fundraising software an asset
